Food establishments in Johnson County are not required to have a food operating permit. All permanent food establishments should submit plans and specifications to the Johnson County Community Health Services and appropriate jurisdictions prior to construction or remodeling. All permanent food establishments must be inspected prior to opening.

Food Handlers Training Course
JCCHS will be offering this 1 ½ hour introductory course, which covers the basics of Safe Food Handling, Dangers of Foodborne Illness and Personal Hygiene. This course is recommend for all food service facility employees (wait staff, bartenders, cooks, deli workers and dishwashers). There is no fee

Food Service Managers Course
JCCHS will be offering this 4 hour course, which will give managers the knowledge needed to prevent foodborne disease and comply with the requirements of the
1999 Missouri Food Code. There is no fee

ServSafe® Food Protection Manager Certification Course & Exam
JCCHS will be offering the National Restaurant Associations Educational Foundation's "ServSafe® Food Protection Manager Certification Course & Examination". This ServSafe® course and examination is a nationally accredited course required by many restaurants prior to promotion to a management position. Participants must read the textbook "ServSafe® Essentials 4th Edition" thoroughly prior to class. The pace of this one–day (8 hour) review session is rapid and the test will be administered at the end of the class. The review will cover food microbiology; foodborne illness; proper receiving and storage of food; food preparation; HACCP principals; pest control; and related topics. JCCHS will be offering this course approximately every 6 months.
Participants have the opportunity to purchase the book and exam for $90.00, or if you own the book the cost of the exam is $40.00. Books being purchased through JCCHS should be picked up at JCCHS three weeks prior to the course date to allow participants adequate time to read the textbook. The book and exam must be paid for at that time. Please use the

* Both the JCCHS Food Handlers and Food Service Managers courses are recognized by Kansas City Metro area Health Departments (KCMO, Independence, and Jackson County) that require Food Handler permits to work in food service establishments. By presenting your training certificate and paying a fee these Health Departments will issue the required permit to work in their jurisdiction.
